why do  you need raised beds at all? Assuming you're not gardening on concrete, surely the soil carries on downwards far enough for a carrot not to start poking through the ceiling of hell or whatever's down there?

I build 4' wide bed if I can have access from all sides; otherwise, I build 2.5' if up against a wall or fence.  Did I see you putting plastic on the beds?  How does that work for drainage?  Does it not block earth worms?  I used to use weed cloth, which is permeable, but then I realized I had not worms in my beds.  I'm not sure if the cloth blocks them or there  simply aren't any on my lot.  In any case, I now only use cardboard for weed suppression and 2" layer of mulch, then I fill the remainder of the beds with compost.

These are great tips how I would leave out the railway timbers. They are soaked in Creosote which has been banned in many countries.

Great tips for raised beds!  I just built some new ones recently, and I agree, 4 ft wide if you have access to both sides is the perfect width.  Mine were 2 ft wide against a fence with access one one side only and I'm so glad I didn't make them any wider.  I can just reach to the other side to tend to my plants!  Thanks, Huw!

Thank you so much for the shout out, I was wondering where the additional subs were coming from. Love the information on the raised beds and I agree with the width being about 4 feet across.
